OK, so I was using an alarm to remind me to do something, but when the alarm went off there was not sound, it only vibrated.
I went through all the settings but couldn’t get it to sound.
Eventually I found the solution on this forum: when selecting what alarm sound to play, on the multiple choice menu,
use the volume control to adjust the Alarm Volume (this is different from Ringer Volume). Turn up the alarm volume to the desired level and test the alarm again.
It should work now.
This works for the HTC Hero, and I expect will be the same for other phones using the Sense UI. It may also work for other Android phones, based on my fiddling with the Android emulator. Does it work for you? Why not tell us what phone it worked for in the comments below.
EDIT: (13/03/2010 09:10) Made introduction a bit clearer about the nature of the problem (alarm goes off but without sound) and added final paragraph about what phones this may work for (potentially all Android phones if the emulator is anything to go by)

Thank you! Frustrating problem to solve, but this worked like a charm for me.

“Frustrating problem to solve”
Tell me about it! I thought my phone was broken at first, thankfully it wasn’t
Thank you so much for this!
Thanks a lot. This was a lifesaver.
Thanks a lot !
Worked for me as well on a HTC Magic, Android 1.5, HTC Sense software update.
The very first unlogic user interface discovered so far at this Android phone. Else it´s very intuitive – I have never read a tutorial or anything else – I just started to use it and this is the first thing I didn´t found out just by using the phone. Seems like there should be an alarm sound level setpoint slider available within the alarm settings menu instead of using the button on the side of the phone. At least for me it´s not very logic to use the physical button for this.
Works great! Thanks for help.
this will not work all the time. trust me, i’ve tried all the “fixes”. until google fix the firmware to speak with the hardware properly, the software clock pauses/switches off after a period of time in standby mode. this makes it “miss” the clock and so the alarm doesn’t spring. alarm going off and not making a sound/vibrating is a minor issue compared to alarm not going off at all…
Indeed Bob, this will not fix an alarm that does not go off at all. This fix is specifically dealing with when the alarm triggers but doesn’t make the alarm sound.
If you’re having issues with the alarm not triggering at all, then that is another problem entirely.
Fortunately I’ve not encountered the problem you describe, yet, but I can imagine it’s incredibly frustrating, especially if it’s something that Google has to fix and you can do nothing about
